THstudio Architects designs the RMUTI engineering workshop under the vision of the Faculty of Engineering of the Rajamangala Isan University of Technology, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The old building, on which the new project is designed, was overdue and a new way of using it was taken into account. The search to complete a new meaning according to a new requirement becomes a process of interpretation about the context of the construction and the existing university.
The purpose of THstudio Architects when designing the RMUTI engineering workshop is to develop the architectural theory and the educational intention in the context of the university that is integrated into the existing building.

The conceptual design of the workshop is "THE MACHINE CAN MOVE AND NEVER STOP", a position that expresses the potential and the possibility in the field of engineering and education. The redesign of the façade respects the diamond shape, which is a memory for people. The programs are coded by different colors depending on the use of the spaces.

The project is located in the educational environment, so the environment is provided to encourage students to gain experience in the professional environment.

Description of project by THstudio Architects

Our scenario

RMUTI engineering workshop is a reconstruction project under the vision of Faculty of Engineering of Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.  Since the old building was expired and new way of using such building took into account, therefore the project comes up. Searching to fill in a new meaning in accordance with a new requirement becomes a process of interpretation over the existing building and university context. The purpose of design is to develop architectural theory and educational intention in university’s context which is integrated into the building is used as an engineering workshop.

Space & form of architecture

The conceptual design of the engineering workshop is ‘MACHINE CAN MOVE AND NEVER STOP’, it serves to identify the vision and action of the faculty. In addition, it is a communicative stance of architectural design to express to potential and possibility in engineering and educational filed.

The outline of the machine is the key idea for designing space and forms. The design of the building as a big movement machine to express its engineering character. In term of existing building, the diamond shape on the building façade is a valuable element and remembrance of people in the university. For the reason, we redesign the diamond shape façade on of the new engineering workshop façades.

In part of space programs, the programs are coded by different colors depend on usage of Automotive, Mechanical, and Mechatronic engineering workspaces, it metaphors like parts of machinery to cooperate together. The building is intended to create the livable engineering workshop.

Sense of place

Interpretation in architectural design process is important for understanding and open for getting wider phenomenon of place-ness and its context. The site located in the educational environment, architectural design is one of creative activities to promote the RMUTI educational philosophy is provided the environment to encourage students as professional expertise in each fields. It is the same intention of Architecture of the engineering workshop.

Between profesional and inspiration

The RMUTI engineering Workshop is different from the existing buildings in the university. The educational environment inspires us to design a building to inspire people who are around and use it. In addition, the engineering workshop responded to the vision of professional expertise in educational community as another important aim. Architecture design demonstrated to the building as utilitarian and innovative object in educational environment.
