The project embodies the Netherlands’ chosen theme of ‘uniting water, energy, food’ by creating a "closed-loop climate system" centred around a tower of plants. The design will allow visitors to be immersed in silence, warmth, coolness, light, darkness, agriculture and water, and in which they can discover natural ways of controlling climate.
The Dutch pavilion (3,727 m²) is in the Sustainability district and forms the culmination of the Netherlands’ multi-year campaign in the Gulf region, focusing on Dutch expertise in the domain of water-energy-food.
The 35th World Expo will take place in Dubai, between 20 October 2020 and 10 April 2021. It is the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East. Under the overarching theme of ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’, 170 countries will present ideas, innovations and technologies.
The World Fair is the third largest event in the world after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.
Expo 2020 will also feature a UK pavilion designed by Es Devlin; the Spanish Pavilion by Amann-Canovas-Maruria; one from Switzerland by HHF Architects; and a series of theme pavilions run by Foster + Partners, BIG and Grimshaw.
