The Tanzhaus Zürich, the dance house at Wasserwerkstrasse 127a, in the Wipkingen district of the 10th district of Zurich, founded in 1996 as Tanzhaus Wasserwerk, is one of the most important centers for contemporary dance in Switzerland.

The new building recovers the municipal building that burned to its foundations in the fall of 2012. The new building, following the existing fire protection regulations (§ 307 PBG), should be created in the same place and with the same dimensions. In 2014, the city council organized a project competition, which won the Spanish architecture studio Barozzi / Veiga.

In Switzerland, the duo has designed the new building of the Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur or the new Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts right next to Lausanne train station.
The construction work for the replacement building for the Tanzhaus was commenced in September 2016 and the authorities highlight that they were completed at the end of May 2019 in compliance with the budget. A total cost of 10.9 million Swiss francs.

The new building designed by Barozzi / Veiga is integrated into the slope with a stepped design that reduces its visual impact towards the river. The fragmentation of the project dissolves its image that is barely perceived from the outside. Two structural bands that create terraces and landscaped roofs as an exterior extension of the building and as possible walks near the Limmat river.

The facade is resolved through systematic repetition of a single element with the composition of two rows of trapezoidal windows, which at first glance seem the same: twenty-four triangular pillars are lined up along the edge of the Limmat, above them a series of thirty-five smaller concrete triangles.

The fragmented design on two levels by Barozzi / Veiga allows you to organize the dance school program, each one with its own entrance. The more public spaces take up the ground floor, while the more private ones are laid out on the upper floor.

Foyer as a connecting element
 
It is a meeting place for the dance makers and the population as well as a place of residence for the audience before and after the events. Behind the foyer are on the ground floor rehearsal rooms and the stage, while upstairs, inter alia, offices and cloakrooms are housed. The Minergie ECO standard has a heat pump with geothermal probes and is mainly made of CEMIII / B recycled cement. Instead of blinds there is a window greening. The leaves serve as sun protection in the summer, conversely the warming sun penetrates better during the winter "foliage-free" condition.

In 2012, the previous-existing municipal building at Wasserwerkstrasse 127a in Zürich- Wipkingen, accommodating the Tanzhaus and the Swiss Textile School, was destroyed by a fire.

In 2014 Barozzi Veiga won the international competition carried out by the Amt für Hochbauten Zürich, for the construction of a new Tanzhaus and the transformation of the entire bank of the river Limmat.

The project aimed to reactivate the promenade along the river, transforming and redefining the previous residential conditions of the location. In this way, the building is defined as a simple and tiered volume of space, integrated into the slope and barely noticeable from the outside. An element that enables a new public space to be generated on its roof and that connects the existing itineraries at different levels that intertwine along its bank.

The transformation had sensitively addressed the listed building ensemble. By precisely incorporating the replacement new building into its environment, the project skilfully combines old and new.

The building resolves the relationship with its surroundings through the definition of its main elevation. This consists in a sort of infrastructure, a continuous façade that can be read as a reinterpretation of existing surrounding elements, which are evidences of the industrial past of this area (i.e. the overpassing passages, the continuous modular metal structures of the bridge, the baths’ longitudinal piers.)

The choice of the trapezoidal form is the result of a transformation of the traditional orthogonal system of pillars, beams and rectangular openings. Indeed, the repetition of this particular shape and the use of a performing insulating concrete allowed for a continuous structural façade, which, at the same time, protects and characterizes the building.

The uniform façade defines and evenly opens up to the entire public space along the river, connecting the outdoor space to the foyer, extending and enriching the new public space. The geometry of the trapezoidal openings simultaneously allow both for this extremely permeable façade and to control and shape the entry of the natural light inside the building. The resulting shadows given by the facade drawing and the vegetation become one of the main features of the foyer.

The programme is organized across two levels, separating private uses on the upper level from public uses on the lower one. This division allows for different accesses and activates the circulation around the building, reinforcing its public nature at that level in direct contact with the river Limmat. Here, the main foyer runs over the entire length of the façade and gives access to the production rooms and the main multifunctional hall. This space, which spans two storeys, is provided with daylight on the side. The upper level accommodates the Tanzhaus offices and backstage spaces.

The project by Barozzi Veiga consists in a new cultural building for the city of Zürich, which reflects the importance of the Tanzhaus as one of the most significant centres for contemporary dance in Switzerland.

Fabrizio Barozzi born in Rovereto (Italy) in 1976. He currently lives and works in Barcelona.He graduated as an architect in 2003 by the University Institute of Architecture in Venezia. He completed his training in 1999 at the School of Architecture of Seville in 2001 while living in Paris.

He began his training partner in 2003 working as the office of William Vázquez Consuegra and later in 2004 is associated with Alberto Veiga and establish their own professional studio.

He has been Professor of Projects at International University of Catalonia in Barcelona from 2007 to 2009 and since 2009 is Associate Professor of Projects at the University of Girona.

Alberto Veiga (Santiago de Compostela, Spain), was born in 1973 and studied architecture at the School of Architecture of Navarre. After graduating, he worked as an assistant and planner in Patxi Mangado practices in 1997-2001. From 2001-03, he worked as a designer of Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, where he worked on a number of projects awarded. In 2004 he settled in EBV Architects with Fabrizio Barozzi. Projects currently teaches 3rd year at UIC.

EBV Architects is an architectural firm located in Barcelona and founded by Fabrizio Barozzi (Trento, Italy, 1976) and Alberto Veiga (Santiago, Spain, 1973) devoted to architecture, urbanism and interior design. The experience accumulated over the years in collaboration with renowned architects has allowed prestige EBV start a professional career where independent research plays a major role. The study EBV and has been awarded with many awards nationally and internationally.
