New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced on Tuesday that the city will spend $100 million to close part of the gap, of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, with another $5 million dedicated to smaller gaps in Harlem and Inwood.

The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway is a 32-mile ring of parkland that surrounds Manhattan—or almost all of it, that is. Between 41st and 61st Streets along the East River lies a “glaring gap”, as The New York Times calls it "where along the East River only a highway runs by".

“The Hudson River Greenway has vastly improved quality of life on the West Side, and we want families in every corner in the borough to have that same access to bike, walk and play along the water,” Mr. de Blasio said. “This is the first of many big investments we’ll make as we bring the full Greenway to reality.”

Construction to fill in part of the missing piece, from 53rd to 61st Street, will begin in 2019 to 2022. The path will be built over the water and rest atop pilings, similar to the paths on the Upper West Side. The greenway began in 1993, is something that has been dreamed of and talked about for decades in New York.
