The design by Jorge Penadés for Camper in Malaga starts from his visit to the Binissalem warehouse, a village in the centre of the island of Mallorca where the headquarters of the footwear manufacturing company are located.

During the visit to one warehouses he found himself surrounded by old furniture previously used in other Camper stores and custom-made pieces by designers as Michele de Lucci, Gaetano Pesce, Ingo Maurer, The Bouroullec Brothers or Konstantin Grcic.
Jorge Penadés principal of Oficina Penadés  wanted to use the available space as a temporary factory to start self-manufacturing the pieces for the store in Malaga.

Last summer, therefore, the whole team of Oficina Penadés moved to Mallorca to build the custom-designed pieces using three simple carpentry elements –metal profiles, corner plates and bolts– and giving shape to all the necessary furnishings, including the typography of the numbers.

The Spanish studio created shelving with a very simple design and construction details, with a pop-industrial aesthetic biven by brightly coloured lacquering and the combination of coloured neon.

Project description by Oficina Penadés

The first meeting Jorge had with the Camper team was in a warehouse in Binissalem, a small village in the center of Mallorca. Mainly used as a storage space for old camper shops that have been refurbished and updated, it also works as a sort of archive with custom-made pieces from Michele de Lucci, Gaetano Pesce, Ingo Maurer, The Bouroullec Brothers or Konstantin Grcic.

Immediately after entering Jorge felt absolutely drawn to this place and proposed a risky idea: “What if I use this space as a temporary factory and I self-produce the entire shop from here? Together with his team, Jorge moved to Mallorca in the summer of 2019.

Using just 3 basic elements – perforated metal profiles, corner plates and bolts/nuts – Jorge designed and fabricated all the necessary elements for the store: from product display shelves and tables to different seating units, lighting, checkout counter, brand logos and as a bonus: a typography.

As part of the Camper Together project, this is the first time in the history of the company that someone is allowed to design and fabricate an entire shop with his own hands.

Oficina Penadés is a Madrid-based office for experimental ideas founded in 2015 by Spanish designer Jorge Penadés.

Jorge Penadés Born in a small fisherman´s village of Málaga, in 1985. He originally studied interior design in Barcelona before graduating in December 2014 from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Madrid with a Master´s degree in experimental design and conceptual thinking directed by Katharina Mischer & Thomas Traxler. He established his own practice in 2015 in Madrid.

Jorge cultivates a dissident approach to the contemporary notion of design; he audits heterodox ideas in order to generate unpredictable outcomes which often manifest in new materials, objects, written pieces, one-off commissions or architectural experiences.

His work has been internationally legitimized by several museums, galleries and design venues including Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein), National Museum Design (Stockholm), Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (Madrid), Museu del Disseny (Barcelona), The Aram Gallery (London), Villa Noailles (Hyères), Rossana Orlandi (Milan), Machado-Muñoz (Madrid) or at London, Milan, Stockholm, Lima, Berlin, Madrid, Prague, Bratislava, Zagreb, Lodz and Dutch Design Week.
