“ORB” by Spy is part of the major group exhibition ‘Forever Is Now II’, organized by Culturvator/ Art D’Égypte in collaboration with UNESCO and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

From October 27 to November 29, 2022, the project brings together the works of 12 international artists, including Emilio Ferro, JR, eL Seed, and Jwan Yosef, set against the backdrop of the Pyramids of Giza, the monumental UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The exhibition proposes a universal cultural heritage confronted with contemporary artistic practices, exploring themes from the distant past to the present to dream about the future of humanity.
“Orb”, by SpY, is an art piece that draws its inspiration from ancient Egyptian culture, using forms and materials that reference elements of mathematics and the notions of creation and rebirth.

SpY seeks to understand the environment, culture and objectives of every new project. Transcend time through artistic works leaving a conceptual and cultural legacy. Memorable works of art that create a sense of pride and belonging to the community.

The artistic concept is explained in simple terms;

If we add the perimeter of the base! (the sum of the four sides of the pyramid) and divide it by twice the height, the result is very close to Pi! (remember that π = 3.141592…).

Or looking at it another way, if a sphere had the same radius as the height of the Great Pyramid, its circumference would have a length value very close to the perimeter of the pyramid. This is valid for any other pyramid of the same proportions.

Our sculpture uses this simple yet beautiful calculation related to the height of the pyramid, its perimeter and the length of the spherical circumference that our ORB will create.

Artwork's concept statement SpY

“Orb” draws its inspiration from the historical Egyptian heritage around it. The choice of form and materials in the piece is presented as a direct reference to elements of mathematics and symbolism present in classic Egyptian culture and in the Pyramids in particular.

The shape of the piece alludes to the ‘pi’ number concealed in the geometry of the Pyramids, found when dividing the perimeter of a Pyramid by twice its height. The sphere is an invisible part of the resulting geometry since a sphere with a radius as high as the Pyramid would have a circumference very close in length to the Pyramid’s perimeter.

The surface of the artwork captures the Pyramids, the sky, the surroundings and the viewers in a multiple fragmented reflection. It references the role of the circular mirror in historical Egyptian symbolism, where it was linked to the sun and conveyed notions of creation and rebirth.

SpY is an urban artist whose first endeavors date back to the mid-eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to explore other forms of artistic communication in the street. His work involves the appropiation urban elements through transformation or replication, commentary on urban reality, and the interference in its communicative codes.

The bulk of his production stems from the observation of the city and an appreciation of its components, not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. His ludic spirit, careful attention to the context of each piece, and a not invasive, constructive attitude, unmistakably characterize his interventions.

SpY's pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience.
