'LANY'. Stunning aerial NY's images by Jeffrey Milstein

New York is a city that always surprises its visitors, that never ceases to surprise even its citizens. The kaleidoscopic city and for a long time chameleonic, has been portrayed by Jeffrey Milstein from a helicopter. Bird-eye views showing different points of the city from a surprising angle. A vision that has been shared with the city of Los Angeles and large machines, such as cruise ships and planes. Photographer Jeffrey Milstein captures cities using high-resolution camera equipment from the open door of a helicopter. He has released these photographs of the Big Apple as part of a his LANY exhibition, featuring images of New York and Los Angeles.

In Benrubi Gallery, Milstein, long known for his images of planes in flight photographed from directly below, reverses the perspective in the current images, offering views of New York and Los Angeles taken from an altitude of 1,000 - 2,000 feet. The distance is far enough that the geometry of the urban streetscape, invisible from the ground, emerges into surprising, often elegant patterns, as in the Masonic-inspired layout of the Park La Brea housing development in Los Angeles, yet close enough that the scenes retain a human feeling, whether it's the claustrophobia of tiny rectangular houses squeezed next to each other in virtually treeless grids. The images suggest that however chaotic or inscrutable modern life might appear, it is tied to age-old patterns that guide in ways we don't immediately perceive, but which nevertheless guide us through our daily routines.

Venue and dates.- LANY is at the Benrubi Gallery, New York, from 9 July to 22 August, and the Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles, from 18 July to 22 August.

Jeffrey Milstein

Jeffrey Milstein is a photographer, architect, graphic designer, and pilot. Milstein’s photographs have been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and Europe, and are currently represented in the USA by Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles and Bonni Benrubi Gallery in NYC; and in Europe by Young Gallery in Brussels . In 2012 Milstein’s work was presented in a solo show at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and included in New Typologies, curated by noted British photographer and critic, Martin Parr. His photographs have been published in New york Times, Los Angeles Times, Harpers,Time, Fortune, European Photography, American Photo, Eyemazing, Die Ziet, Wired, PDN, Esquire, and Condi Naste Traveler. Abrams published Milstein’s aircraft work as a monograph in 2007, and Monacelli published his extensive body of work from Cuba as a monograph in April 2010. Born in Los Angeles, where he frequently returns to shoot at the International Airport, Milstein makes his home in Woodstock, NY.
