This horizontally-concrete house by Braga-based studio Carvalho Araújo is located within Portugal’s National Park. Located on a steep slope in the Caniçada valley, a rural area located 20 miles outside Braga. ‘Gerês House’ replaces the site’s previous building, which was demolished because was located a plot liable to small landslides.

The building by Carvalho Araújo, has timber and board-marked concrete walls that are left exposed across the interior as well as the exterior, and complemented by wooden furniture and grey textiles.

Description of project by Carvalho Araújo

Gerês house is located on a steep slope in the Caniçada Valley where there was a small house and a stream. The existing building was located in an upper level of the land eventually liable to small landslides, which determined its demolition and the relocation of the new construction.

The new construction relates with the land in a very spontaneous way, taking advantage of its steep slope, of the small stream and of the privileged view over the landscape. The access to the house is made from the upper level, ensuring a full view over the lot and over the building that fits on the ground like a rock. However, it’s inside the house where the visual range allows us to (re)discover the land below, characterized by the irregular stream’s route that results in a small lake at the lower level.

The new construction is not looking for a conventional program, but rather large, functional and multipurpose spaces, where pleasure and work are mixed. The social space of the house assumes special relevance, materialized in a large central living room which extends to the outside through a large terrace. The kitchen and services are arranged on the same floor of the living room and the most intimate program comes at a second level, relating with the first one in the form of a mezzanine.

Carvalho Araújo, based in Braga (Portugal) and Sao Paulo (Brazil), Carvalho Araújo’s studio is committed to the search and reflection of different approaches in the fields of architecture, product design and creative direction, trying to combine the design practice with a more strategic view. The projects and products Carvalho Araújo are characterized by elegance and a formal containment attitude, emphasizing the quality of design, proportions and materials. The design is no reason for exhibitionism, but rather a perfectly rational and simultaneously poetic act.

Both in architecture as in the design fields, rather than respond to a specific program or application, it is important for us to question the problems from a formal and strategic point of view, either in the markets but also (in the case of architectural projects) its scale, uses and interaction with the place. The stabilization of a working team that operates in proximity areas translates into a studio’s posture and flexibility that allows us to present the client with a strategical and conceptually clear “final product”.

Their studio has a multidisciplinary team composed by architects, product designers, communication designers and image. Simultaneously we establish specific partnerships for each project, in order to present the customer with a global solution.
