Are you one of those who think the same as Mies van der Rohe "God is in the detail"?, or you are on the side of Rem Koolhaas when he supports that "no money, no details, just concepts"? Anyway, if the world of details inspires you, you can't miss the 2nd 'Detailers' Meeting in Madrid, organized by DETAILERS de SIMON, and in which well-known architects such as Carles Ferrater, from OAB - Office of Architecture in Barcelona, Fermín Vázquez, from b720 Architects or the designer Oscar Mariné will share with the public their personal experiences about the task, as well as references to different architecture masters and examples of good practices of details.

As a result of the meeting, in METALOCUS we are going to take part in the reflection on architecture and details. Because of that, today we bring you 10 examples of maximum attention to detail. Divergent approximations about if it is necessary or not think about architecture with the detail as a starting point. To illustrate every single example, we propose you a quote by the architect or artist and two photographs of their detailed work.

And you? are you a 'detailer'?

  • "God is in the detail".

Mies van der Rohe.

  • "Critics say the detail of our projects is simply bad, and I say there is no detail... No money, no details, just concepts."

Rem Koolhaas. El Croquis nº 53. Madrid, 1991.

  • "In my experience, the best details are usually those that are not consciously perceived. Ironically, details that are too well designed - on which too much emphasis is laid - can impair the overall appearance of a building. That is why it is important to develop a concept that does not set the detail in the foreground too much".

Álvaro Siza.

  • And if you think of brick, for instance, and you say to brick, "What do you want brick?" and brick says to you "I like an arch." And if you say to brick "Look, arches are expensive,  and I can use a concrete lentil over you. What do you think of that?", "Brick?" Brick says: "... I like an Arch"

Louis Kahn.

  • "The quality of a city had less to do with the quality of its buildings or the peculiarities of its location, and more with the quality of its firs 20 cm height"

Enric Miralles.

  • "Architects have made architecture too complex. We need to simplify it and use a language that everyone can understand"

Toyo Ito

  • "Architecture is a thing of art, a phenomenon of the emotions, lying outside questions of construction and beyond them. The purpose of construction is to make things hold together; of architecture to move us."

Le Corbusier.

  • "Architecture, above detail and design, perfection or imperfection, LIES in its most essential components. The details and designs will be valid only if they serve to underline those core issues."

La idea construida, por Alberto Campo.

  • "Independently of the idea then come to the details, which as nothing to do with calculate, it is a problem of sensibility."

Felix Candela.

  • "What I try to do is the art of building, and the art of building is the art of construction; it is not only about forms and shapes and images".

Peter Zumthor.
