Memory of project
The flora of Mexico is considered one of the world’s richest and most varied. Its great mountain ranges and geographical position between the north and south of the American Continent, causes a high rate of native species.
Cactaceae was specifically conceived in one of the natural sceneries where the most important centers of cactus diversity in the world settle: the Semi-desert of the Tropic of Cancer in Mexico. It consists precisely in paying tribute to this landscape, creating a space inspired by the geometry and flowering of the cacti –endemic American plants characterized by its beautiful flowers which contrast with the extraordinary and diverse forms of their stems and thorns.
The piece is conceived through light, exploring an artisan technique of great tradition in Mexico – the papelpicado(perforated paper). An interior space for personal reflection, that allows togeneratea visual dialogue between its interior and the exterior landscape delimited by it.From the inside, the piece frames and suggests the landscape through a floral embroidery of light and shadow. Its limits are defined by a semi-transparent skin that works as a latticework which filters, sifts and fragments light into shadow beams. Throughout the day, its outer appearance changesbetween different tonalities and reflections. At dusk, the light dilutes its apparent solidity, and leads it to become a piece that illuminates from within and melts into the landscape.
