The Al Bayt stadium in the northern port city of Al Khor , Qatar, a city about 35 km North of the capital Doha (and a city famous for its pearl diving and fishing), mimics the traditional Bedouin tent (Bayt Al Sha’ar) from which it takes its name. Families in Qatar could be identified by black stripes.

Al Bayt stadium is one of the eight stadiums that will host World Cup 2022 matches, and will host the opening match of the FIFA.

The inauguration of the stadium took place on November 30, 2021, on the occasion of opening ceremony for the FIFA Arab Cup 2021. Al Bayt Stadium is the sixth venue to be inaugurated ahead of the World Cup next year. The Zaha Hadid-designed Al Wakrah Stadium hosted its first match in 2019.
Al Bayt stadium is able to accommodate 60,000 spectators, with an area of 200 thousand square meters. The exterior enveloping and the peaked roofs of stands surrounding the pitch were covered in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) woven fiberglass membrane to create the tent-like shape.

A retractable roof in the middle of stands enclose the stadium in 20 minutes.

The project has highly innovative technical and engineering aspects: in particular, the solutions adopted to provide ideal climatic conditions both for the players and for the spectators in an environment with high temperatures and extreme temperature changes.

After 2022, the capacity of the stadium will be reduced to 30,000 instead of the 60,000 for the tournament. The upper part will be converted into a hotel and the removed seats donated to countries that lack a sporting infrastructure.
