The Norwegian architecture firm Sanden + Hodnekvam Arkitekter has designed the T-House in the city of Trondheim in Norway. The house is a reinterpretation of the traditional buildings in the area, known as Trønderlåna, with a long and narrow shape.

The area in which the project is located is characterized by small wooden houses, and is immersed in the forest, protected by the municipality by strict regulations. Therefore, the exterior design adapts to the scale and materiality of the surroundings.
Sanden + Hodnekvam Arkitekter's project is developed on a single T-shaped plan, which allows to obtain two outdoor spaces, each with its own distinct character: the entrance space with the big beech and the more private garden.

The structure consists of wooden frames with birch plywood which, in addition to having a structural function, create the programmatic logic of the house, shaping different areas in the open plan. The modern and bright interior contrasts with the external cladding, made up of charred pine boards and an aluminum roof, allowing the project to fit organically into the place.

Description of project by Sanden + Hodnekvam Arkitekter

The site is located in the outskirts of Trondheim, Norway. The area consist of smaller wooden houses, forest and a big lake, and is preserved by the municipality with strict regulations. The building is a reinterpretation of the traditional housing buildings in the area, Trønderlåna.

The exterior adapts to the scale and materiality of the surroundings, while the interior shows a new take on the vernacular typology. The house consists of three wings creating two outdoor spaces, each with its own distinct character. A wooden frame construction creates the logic of the house, both programatic and constructional.

The frames create different zones in the open plan. Birch plywood is systematically cut and mounted, with a minimum of leftover material. Charred pine boards in small dimensions corresponds to the rhythm of the curves of the aluminium roof.
