The ideas competition for the renovation of the M30 Funeral Home in Madrid was called by Servicios Funerarios de Madrid (SFM), which had the advice of Open House Madrid, in order to renovate the facilities of the funeral home to meet the needs of those who needed in such a delicate moment.
The investment will be about 2.6 million euros and seeks to obtain the solution that best suits the particular circumstances of the building in which this action is to be carried out. For the final resolution, the jury took into account the adequacy of spaces, sustainability and energy efficiency, safety and accessibility, and on the winning project concluded “natural light as the protagonist, which maintains the sober character of the building, giving it a more comfortable character and warm, which allows adapting the proposal to current needs "
The M30 Funeral Parlor, located at Calle Salvador de Madariaga 11, was designed in 1982 by the architect Antonio Fernández Alba, winner of the National Architecture Prize in 1963 and 2003, and the Gold Medal of Architecture 2002. The building, inaugurated in 1984, has high protection according to the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) that mainly affects its envelope, so this will be the only part that must be preserved intact.
The renovation plan will be carried out in three phases, allowing the funeral home to continue providing its services while the works are being carried out. In the first phase, the public use areas will be reformed, that is, the twenty-eight rooms, the atrium and the chapel/ceremony room, as well as the commercial service area and the cafeteria, including stairs and auxiliary spaces. In the second phase, work will be carried out in rooms for internal use, that is, offices, warehouse, etc. The third phase will address the building envelope.
The execution of the renovation actions for the M30 Funeral Parlor will foreseeably begin in the third quarter of 2021, once the project has been prepared and the civil works have been contracted. The completion period will take place in the year 2022.
The contest was public and prizes awarded to the three best proposals with a total endowment of € 18,000, with € 10,000 for the first prize, this being 'La luz que guía' € 5,000 for the second, 'Velorio' by Oscar Cruz García, and € 3,000 for the third, 'Tanat, Un faro para la ciudad', by Carmen Paz Pérez de Colosía and Daniel Marcos Antonio Reales.
