Boardwalk Empire is an American television series from premium cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era.
HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' uses New York as a stand-in for Atlantic City, Chicago and Los Angeles.Much part of the challenge was the architecture. They considering places like Asbury Park in New Jersey. They have looked everywhere, from Coney Island to Rockaway, Syracuse and Utica. There was not an unique context because cities have developed so quickly that it is difficult to find a lot of '20s architecture.
During two years prior to the series premiere, Brainstorm Digital, the New York-based VFX studio that specializes in photo-realistic backgrounds and digital effects, got underway an extensive pre-visualization effort with computer generated 3D imagery in conjunction with 2D matte paintings, to display the life of "Boardwalk Empire during the Prohibition-era ".
