The Sau Taller d’Arquitectura study carried out the interior reform of the Aleix and Mariona’s House in San Juan de las Abadesas, a municipality belonging to the province of Gerona in the Ripollés region characterized by its abundant green areas.
For the interior reform of the Aleix and Mariona’s House, Sau Taller d’Arquitectura start from a house in which the main problem is the poor condition of the roof, both the materials and the tightness of it.

Faced with this problem, it is opted for its complete replacement using a Pratt beam as a strategy to optimize the volume of the house. This makes the surface of the house increase in addition to allowing natural light to enter it.

Project description by Sau Taller d’Arquitectura

Sau Taller d’Arquitectura was asked for a refurbishment project from Aleix and Mariona who wanted to renovate their 39 sqm flat in Sant Joan de les Abadesses. The concrete beam ceiling was deteriorated and the roof components could not assure a proper sealing neither the desired climate performance. Based on these premises the intervention completelly renew the roof and the structure will be solved with only one element, the Pratt beam which will support the prefabricated panels of the new roof and those that conform the mezzanine floor. This way the section of the flat is recovered as well as 19 sqm of mezzanine floor are gained.

In this way, the toilet, the kitchen and the common stairs are found next to the north dividing wall and under the mezzanine floor. The suite and a studio/dressing room is located on the mezzanine floor, these rooms are given plenty of light and ventilation through the roof. Throughout the south façade we find a double height space with nice views and sunlight the whole day, in this space the dinning and the living rooms are located.

In addition, there was the aim of improving the space sense. This was achieved placing glass in some parts of the Pratt beam to create new lines of sight through the spaces, also a new window was built which improves the light and sights of the flat. In regards to the material aspect, the most neutral materials like glass and wood have been chosen in order to not to overload the space.

The ultimate objective is to create an unpolluted space where its users are the ones expected to give personality to the place.
