Italian giants A.S. Roma, one of football's most storied clubs, has released images of its planned Populous-designed new stadium. Plans are for the stadium to take up an elevated site in Rome's northeastern Pietralata neighbourhood. According to AS Roma, it become a landmark for the city.

The stadium will be a permanent home for AS Roma, which replaces the 71-year-old Stadio Olimpico, which has shared the Stadio Olimpico with rival club Lazio since 1953. A target date for its completion is the club's centenary in 2027.

The design by Populous is a new stadium "inspired by Classical Roman architecture". The key to this vision includes the Curva Sud, the largest single stand in Europe. Now, the title is held by German football club Borussia Dortmund’s stadium, Signal Iduna Park (Westfalenstadion), with a 24,454-seater stand.

It is not the project in the strict sense, but is "the systematic analysis and evaluation of the characteristics, costs and possible results of a project based on a preliminary rough idea."

The proposed capacity of the new AS Roma stadium is roughly 60,000 - 65,000, a facility whose capacity can be adjusted according to needs and events. Now the Stadio Olimpico has 67,000 seats, the team’s current home.

The study intends to allow public transportation to and from the stadium, taking advantage of the 4 nearby subway stops and the Tiburtina train station.

Also in Serie A, Populous is designing the new home for Inter Milan ahead of its move from San Siro Stadium to Rozzano.
