The exhibition, curated by Jesús Donaire, architect and former
RAER fellow, has the presence of: Javier Arbizu, Juan Baraja, Ángela Bonadies, Julia de Castro, María Teresa Chicote, Roberto Coromina, Miren Doiz, María Esteban Casañas, Inma Herrera, Javier Hontoria, Miguel Leiro, Miguel Marina, Leire Mayendía, Cecilia Molano, Álvaro Negro, Nuria Núñez, Santiago Pastor, Abel Paúl, Milena Rossignoli, María Gisèle Royo, Javier Sáez Castán, Elena Trapanese and Ana Zamora.
For 145 years the RAER has received scholarship holders at its headquarters located in San Pietro in Montorio next to the spectacular Bramante Temple. La radice del domani makes mention of that tomorrow that is yet to be discovered and to an institution that has had the capacity to adapt to change through the expansion of artistic disciplines throughout its history.
It also evokes the Roman origin as one of the basic roots of Western culture and as a source of inspiration for the many creators who have been granted scholarships by the Academy.
As usual, the headquarters of the Madrid exhibition will be the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, which for the first time will occupy two temporary exhibition spaces, which will give it greater visibility when it comes to showing the works and that will result in higher quality of perception of the set by the visitor.
Classical disciplines scholarships - painting, sculpture, architecture, music and engraving - established during the first hundred years of the Academy have been enjoyed in the 2017-2018 promotion by the creators Miguel Marina, Roberto Coromina, Javier Arbizu, Miren Doiz, Álvaro Negro, Milena Rossignoli, María Esteban Casañas, Santiago Pastor, Abel Paúl, Núria Núñez and Inma Herrera. Later, the institution was open to other disciplines such as art history, restoration, archeology, museology and literature, represented this year by María Teresa Chicote and Elena Trapanese.
The rise of creativity through other formats required another extension and, therefore, approximately 50 years ago, the institution also welcomed cinematography, photography and visual and performing arts, represented by María Gisèle Royo, Ángela Bonadies, Juan Baraja, Javier Sáez Castán, Julia de Castro, Ana Zamora and Cecilia Molano.
The recently incorporated disciplines, following the spirit of openness that has always characterized the RAER, have been the comic, graphic design, video creation, curating and artistic mediation, visual arts, gastronomy, fashion, industrial design and new technologies. This year developed by Leire Mayendía, Javier Hontoria and Miguel Leiro.
The exhibition La radice del domani is the result of the coexistence of all these creators and their disciplines in a context characterized by creation, research and experimentation in constant development, under the guiding thread of its curator Jesus Donaire, who knows the institution very closely, having also been a fellow. In Rome, the director of the Academy, Ángeles Albert, takes care of accompanying all the pensioners in the creative processes they develop during their stay.
In the words of Donaire, "during the year in question we have been able to witness the valuable work of fellows are part of these new disciplines, which are beginning to consolidate among those
more classic".
The RAER maintains, since its inauguration, a fundamental role in the formation of generations of Spanish and Latin American artists and intellectuals, as well as being a space of artistic creation, research and residency in our country.
