Tonight are The 91st Academy Awards, below we chosen five films  from this year's nominees, set designs from, the afrofuturist cityscapes of Black Panther's Wakanda, to the meticulous detail of Roma.
Urbanscapes. Roma by Eugenio Caballero

Set in 1970s Mexico City, Alfonso Cuarón describes the production design made by Eugenio Caballero for each film as "impeccable". Oscar winner for El laberinto del fauno his work for Roma was no exception and he recreated part of Mexico City in the seventies, building detailed sets for black and white drama Roma.

While much of the furniture came from Cuarón's family, Caballero built facades over street buildings to recreate the period, which he based on old photographs.

Urbanscapes Black Panther by Hannah Beachler

Production designer Hannah Beachler, the first woman ever recognized in the category, looked to the architecture of Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid, Buckingham Palace and afrofuturism when creating the fictional world of Wakanda for the hit Marvel film Black Panther.

In the real world, specific points of reference,  large buildings and apartment blocks using vegetation. Such as the The Tencent Tower project in Canton or the awarded project One Central Park by French Ateliers Jean Nouvel. The building’s key features include hanging gardens, a cantilevered heliostat and low-carbon emission green walls of vegetation and gardens designed by French landscape artist Patrick Blanc. This real building has 1,120 sqm of vertical gardens that cover the surface of the building. it grows 35,200 plants of 383 different species on the exterior of the building.

Fiction spaces. Isle of Dogs by Paul Harrod

Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson's latest film, has received numerous awards and nominations including the Golden Globes and BAFTA 2018 and the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Festival for Best Direction. Production designer Paul Harrod took cues from the Japanese metabolist architecture movement work when constructing the "hellish and beautiful" architecture of Wes Anderson's stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs. And the work of Tim Allen, along with a great team of professionals and artists, has recreated a stylized and nostalgic Japan through more than 1,000 sophisticated puppets that have inhabited 240 sets.

Interior spaces. The Favourite by Fiona Crombie

The Favourite is no staid period piece. Filmed in England's historic Hatfield House, production designer Fiona Crombie designed one world to house extreme spectrum. There's a duck race and a dancing scene so bizarre it'd be out of place in a conceptual art show. And yet, it ostensibly takes place in a centuries-old royal court, gilt finishings and powdered wigs.

they seem to have worked quite well. Crombie took home the BAFTA for Best Production Design this year.

Moon-scape. First Man by Nathan Crowley

The film begins in 1961 when Neil can barely break into orbit, and follows him through to the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969. How do you fake the moon? Production designer Nathan Crowley was tasked with faking a moon landing in Damian Chazelle's First Man, a biopic that follows Neil Armstrong's quest to walk on the moon.

Crowley worked closely with NASA to accurately depict the space station equipment, space suits and merchandise used in the film, which spans more than a decade in Armstrong's life.
